Before I say anything else: I was quoted in this cool profile on debut author Tomi Adeyemi so definitely check it out over at Refinery29.
Do you ever have a day where you’re just in a bad mood? That was me for a couple of days this week. Partly it’s carryover from tax prep (because of course it is) and partly I’m migrating to gmail for all of my accounts (including my blog one so be sure to update accordingly!) which is just the most annoying thing ever.
How is your tax prep going? Have you ever had to switch emails?
I’m feeling very enthusiastic about my blog and instagram stuff but I also feel like my efforts aren’t having much payoff. That isn’t entirely true. My blog traffic is higher than it’s ever been and I’m loving my photos. But I also feel like I’ve been playing the blog game for 10+ years and it’s like I still spend a lot of time talking to myself or into the void while newer, shinier blogs seem to instantly be more successful and popular. I know that’s probably only 30% of the story and I can’t see behind the scenes but it’s hard to avoid those feelings.
With Instagram it’s like the minute I figure out some of the rules, they all change. And it’s so cliquey sometimes that no one even wants to talk about it or admit that this is an issue. I also hate the new/shiny/buy everything culture surrounding bookstagram and reps and all that. I am trying to remain aware of it being a problem for me/in general while still enjoying participating in small ways.
How do you feel about #bookstagram?
So anyway I was really frustrated about all things social media this week, obviously. I’m trying to let it go and remind myself that I am in this because I love it–everything else is extra and probably not worth my attention. I just need to stay in my own lane.
What do you do when everything starts to feel frustrating?
Here are two of my favorite posts I shared on Instagram this week:
What would you do if you could never go home again? ▪️ Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children is the last stop for the girls—because they are overwhelmingly girls—who managed to slip away unnoticed and pass through a magic door into another world. ▪️ They never find the same things in their worlds. Some are Nonsense while others thrive on the rules of Logic. Some are Wicked and others are high Virtue. But even with their differences the worlds all have something in common: for the children who find them they feel like home. ▪️ And for the Wayward Children the doors have closed to them—maybe forever. So now they have to learn to move on. If they can. ▪️ After her time in the Halls of the Dead, Nancy doesn’t think it’s so simple. Now that she’s surrounded by other exiles like herself the only certainty is that they are trapped together until their doors appear again. If they do. ▪️ When students at the school become victims of grisly murders Nancy seems the obvious suspect. She knows she isn’t the killer but she doesn’t know how convince anyone else of that—or to find the real culprit—anymore than she knows how to get back home. ▪️ Every Heart a Doorway is a wild ride and a thoughtful exploration or portal fantasies and magic. ▪️ Have you read this one yet? What kind of magical world would you like to find yourself in? ▪️ #instabooks #currentlyreading #amreading #instareads #bookgram #bookworm #bookblogging #bookblogger #bookstagrammer #bibliophile #booklove #bookphotography #instabook #reading #reader #booktography #bookstagram #igreads #booksofinstagram #goodreads #bookaholic #bookish #bookishfeature #bookstafeatures #bookstagramfeature #readersofinstagram
My apartment is a giant instagram prop stockpile. Here you can see my sequined horse, Bill, and my fairy door (watch for that in tomorrow’s post too), along with my pewter figurine collection. The print at right is a find from my mom and the Boston Terrier figurine is the first thing I ever bought in an antique store. ▪️ What do you collect?
