Top Ten Tuesday: Favorite Fantasies

So here are ten of my favorite fantasies that I haven’t talked ad infinitum about recently (I read a ton of fantasies so think of this more as a current favorites list!)

  1. The New Policeman by Kate Thompson: The start of a series that has MG/YA crossover this is a charming story of Ireland and fairies as well as the even rarer magic of family.
  2. The Blue Girl by Charles De Lint: Imogen thinks it’s strange when she starts seeing her imaginary friend again. Then come the ghosts and the other, harder to define things–that’s when the story gets really good.
  3. Don’t Expect Magic by Kathy McCullough: Delaney wants nothing to do with her father or his weirdly sterile LA home. But she doesn’t have a choice about that. Or, it seems, about her father’s very unique heritage.
  4. Once a Witch by Carolyn MacCullough: Tamsin is used to being the “normal” one in her family of witches. But sometimes being normal can lead to some very special adventures.
  5. Sea Change by Aimee Friedman: Miranda is used to being logical and analytical. But everything she knows is turned upside when she spends a summer at Selkie Island.
  6. The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner: When I say this book I really mean the entire series. I never cease to be amazed by how tightly this series is plotted.
  7. Extraordinary by Nancy Werlin: Phoebe is a great heroine in this story of friendship and betrayal and decidedly NOT romance.
  8. Song of the Sparrow by Lisa Ann Sandell: This verse retelling of Arthurian legend had since become canon for me. I will accept no other version as accurate. There is only this version.
  9. Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly: I’ve been thinking about this book a lot lately with its blend of magic realism, history and music. So good. So rich.
  10. Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson: A retelling of Peter Pan with a focus on Tiger Lily, as narrated by Tinkerbell. I didn’t think it would be a personal favorite but here I am still thinking about it two years after I read it.
